The Business Case for Strengthening Corporate Governance in Emerging Markets – Impact on Firm Performance and Economic Development
Overview
On Tuesday 1 March 2011 in New Delhi, the International Centre for Financial Regulation, supported by the British High Commission, hosted a high level roundtable to further the ICFR’s programme on Corporate Governance in Emerging Markets.
The ICFR is particularly interested in developing a clear understanding of both the macro- and micro-economic benefits of robust yet practical governance structures; for a corporation, what is the business case for effective corporate governance and for an economy as a whole how can effective governance widen and deepen financial markets by improving attractiveness and reducing risk for investors?
This roundtable coincided with a call for papers on the micro and macro topics above which will be presented and discussed at a major ICFR conference in India in September 2011.
The clear objective of this programme was to inform and support policy decisions and practice development in emerging markets.
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Mridul Saggar, Director, Prices and Monetary Research Division (PMRD), Reserve Bank of India, explored several dimensions revolving around the title “Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation”. His presentation addressed both the corporate governance in financial institutions as well as the role financial institutions can play in furthering corporate governance, covering theoretical and practical aspects.
